Welsh Language

Coleg y Cymoedd has adopted the principle of treating the Welsh and English languages on a basis of equality when conducting its business with the public.

A Welsh Language Scheme has been developed for Coleg y Cymoedd. The Scheme is based on the former Coleg Morgannwg Welsh Language Scheme and has been amended following the merger with The College Ystrad Mynach on the 1st August 2013. The Scheme has also taken into consideration the guidelines provided by the Welsh Language Commissioner on Welsh Language Schemes for FE Colleges, the Welsh Language Commissioner’s Recruitment: Welsh Language Considerations, The Welsh Language Board’s Promoting and Facilitating Bilingual Workplaces and Advice on mainstreaming the Welsh language, the Welsh-medium Education Strategy, the National Strategy on Bilingualism in FE and ColegauCymru’s recommendations on how to respond to the three strands of the Strategy.

The College has a Welsh name to reflect the College’s involvement in the valleys of South East Wales as well as demonstrating the College’s commitment to the Welsh language.

The College has adopted the Welsh Government’s principle of mainstreaming so that it will consider the Welsh language in all aspects of its work and in everything that it does, with the aim of ensuring that every opportunity is taken to:  promote and support the Welsh language; plan, provide and evaluate services in Welsh and English; contribute to the Assembly Government’s vision of a truly bilingual Wales.
