About you and background
My name is Gareth, I’m 30 years old and from Aberdare.
What course did you study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
I studied Creative Media Production (TV & Film)
What made you decide to study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
I’d been to the Rhondda campus on an open day a few years prior to joining the course, and it left a good impression on me. I’d also known people who had attended various campuses, and who recommended I take a course with the college.
Why did you choose to study this course?
Film is something I’ve had an interest in since I was very young, and having the chance to make my own films was too much to pass up!
What are the benefits of studying at Coleg y Cymoedd?
Studying with Coleg y Cymoedd gives you the chance to work with industry professionals – people who live and breathe their subjects – and there are very good links with various industries. I’ve seen students go to work for the BBC and work on projects with the National Film & Television School! While still on the course I myself made campus induction videos for the college and worked on the first Vintage at Goodwood festival filming archive footage of bands and attractions, all of this was made possible through the Creative Media Production course.
What do you intend to do next/what are you doing now that you have left?
I graduated the college in 2010, after which I went to the University of Westminster to study Contemporary Media Practice. I graduated in 2013, took a gap year, and then in 2014 went to the University of South Wales to study for my PGCE! Whilst on the course I managed to get work experience on the same Creative Media Production course I had taken, which then earned me a contract after I had graduated from USW!
How is the course helping you achieve your ambitions?
Taking the Creative Media Production course really helped me achieve what I wanted, as because of this course I got to go to university in London and broaden my knowledge of film and art. It then helped me get a job in teaching, which is something I really enjoy doing.
How will studying impact on your life?
It has impacted my life in so many ways, and all for the better. By the time I left college my confidence had improved immensely, and studying here allowed me to forge a career for myself and it has given me skills that I can apply to a multitude of situations – I’ve been able to make induction videos for the college, work with Musion Academy filming one of their award ceremonies and make wedding videos, as well as make short films as a hobby.
Would you recommend this college and this course to others?
I would recommend this college and the course to anyone interested in vocational courses which prepare their students for both university and working in their chosen industry. I would especially recommend the course to any film fans who want to make their own films and work in the industry.
