About you and background
My name is Llion Jones. I am 22 years of age and live in the town of Aberdare in South Wales. I was taught through the medium of welsh throughout my schooling and studied up to A Level grade. Upon leaving school at the age of 18 I became a bus driver for a short while before becoming an apprentice for British Airways Maintenance Cardiff at the age of 20. I commenced my apprenticeship with British Airways Maintenance Cardiff at Coleg y Cymoedd in September 2013 where I began my BTEC and NVQ studies. I am currently in my second year of my apprenticeship.
What course did you study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
In my first year at Coleg y Cymoedd I studied an NVQ level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations as well as a BTEC level 3 in Aeronautical Engineering which will be completed this year. I am also currently studying a NVQ level 3 Diploma in Aerospace Engineering that will take me into my third year of my apprenticeship.
What made you decide to study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
It was the college chosen by my employer British Airways Maintenance Cardiff.
Why did you choose to study this course?
I have always wanted a career in engineering and felt that pursuing a career within the aerospace industry would be interesting and an exciting opportunity.
What are the benefits of studying at Coleg y Cymoedd?
All of the tutors at Coleg y Cymoedd hold expertise in a wide range of fields. Most of the tutors are former apprentices from an engineering background therefore they understand the needs of each individual who is studying at College y Cymoedd.
The college has excellent facilities. The engineering workshop has all the up to date equipment that is required to complete your practical training for NVQ studies. The college has great IT services which is a great advantage when studying. The college learning centre holds a large selection of books from novels up to aerospace engineering titles.
It also has great easy access from the M4 motorway and A470 with good public transport services to and from the college.
What do you intend to do next?
I am in my second year of my apprenticeship with British Airways Maintenance Cardiff which means that I will be completing my college BTEC course during June 2015. I aim to achieve my BTEC qualification and my NVQ level 3 Diploma in Aerospace Engineering and continue my employment with British Airways Maintenance Cardiff.
How is the course helping you achieve your ambitions?
The courses that I have studied while at Coleg y Cymoedd have taught me many different practical skills and theoretical knowledge that is required to work in an aerospace engineering environment. It has been a great experience, and will be beneficial for the rest of the apprenticeship and my future career.
How will studying impact on your life?
Without doubt the training that myself and every other student receives at Coleg y Cymoedd will allow us to grow our career prospects and pursue the careers that we want. It has definitely increased my confidence and made me realise that you can achieve your ambitions with hard work and commitment.
Would you recommend this college/this course to others?
Definitely, it is a great college to study at. It’s been a great experience studying at Coleg y Cymoedd.
