About you and background
My names is James Evans, I am 32 years of age and live in Pontypridd. I have worked for BT since starting my Modern Apprenticeship at 19 years of age and my current role is an operations manager within Openreach. My family is very important to me and I live only a street away from my parents and brother.
What course did you study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
Foundation Degree in Business Studies.
What made you decide to study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
I became aware of the course whilst browsing the web, having recently completed a Prince2 practitioner course at the South Wales University. The location of the college is local to me and the price of the course seemed to be very reasonable and so I applied to start on the course at short-notice.
Why did you choose to study this course?
I felt that this was relevant to my current job role and could hopefully give me the additional qualifications and learning to progress with my career. This coupled with the longer term employability prospects of more skills very much appealed to me.
What are the benefits of studying at Coleg y Cymoedd?
The locality, environment (fresh and modern), along with the on-site and local amenities (Gym, restaurant, coffee shop, cinema & local fast-food restaurants are close by) are very beneficial.
What do you intend to do next?
I am part-way through the second year of my two-year course, where I am aiming to complete the course with the best results possible. Following completion of the course I am hoping to progress to a top-up for a full degree course at the University campus, where I intend to study the same subject.
How is the course helping you achieve your ambitions?
Given my vocational experience of operating at management level for several years, my progression on this course is helping me to expand on my learning and overall confidence. I have found that the addition of the progression of my studies onto my CV has been a big help with applying for other roles and opportunities within BT for example.
How will studying impact on your life?
Studying has had a positive impact on my social life as I am fortunate to be learning with a very good group of fellow students who are very helpful and friendly. The learning gained through the course has helped with my confidence and overall credibility within work or when updating my status on professional social media sites such as LinkedIn for example.
Would you recommend this college and this course to others?
I certainly would as the teaching staff in particular are very helpful and understanding of my particular situation with trying to hold down a busy job, progressing with my learning and still trying to maintain a healthy work-life-balance. They understand when I require additional support such as overcoming assignments that challenge my weaker points in terms of my overall skills.

James being a practicing telecoms business manager has a wide breadth of business knowledge that he brings to the class and also due to the nature of the learning focus he can also pleasingly apply this to course and assessment work. He seems to be thriving on this.
