About you and background
My name is Amy Powell, I am 29 years old and come from Ynysybwl. I have been a self-employed Holistic Therapist for 7 years, after obtaining my Level 3 Diploma in Holistic Therapies at the college in 2009. I am also currently working in the Bannatyne Spa, Cardiff.
What course did you study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
I returned to the college in 2013 to study the Foundation Degree in Salon Management.
What made you decide to study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
As I had studied at the college previously I kept an eye on the courses available. The college has a good reputation for its beauty and holistic based courses and as soon as I was aware that the Salon Management Foundation Degree was available I applied straight away. The location of the college was also of a huge benefit to me, being local and easy to travel to.
Why did you choose to study this course?
I chose Salon Management as I had been looking to develop my business and take it into a salon environment, but other business courses where either too far away or were too broad and I felt they would not be helpful. The fact that the course was specific to my industry was ideal!
What are the benefits of studying at Coleg y Cymoedd?
The facilities for both spa and beauty were wonderful. The biggest benefit, however, were the tutors, we had several tutors who made sure we were always achieving our best. The college also added extra opportunities for qualifications on top of our course, we were able to take part in Indian Head Massage classes and an Ageing Skin workshop, for example.
What are you doing now that you have left?
This year I achieved a First Class BA(Hons) in Business Studies, with a top up course at the University of South Wales, Treforest Campus. I intend to continue with my education and plan to apply for an academic assistant position at the USW. I hope to use my experience at the college to strengthen the links between vocational and academic subjects.
How is the course helping you achieve your ambitions?
It helped me understand business from a Salon perspective, and our final Work Based Learning project provided me with a secure plan for my business and its future: a plan I am continuing to perfect alongside my academics.
How will studying impact on your life?
Studying this course gave me a huge confidence boost. When I started I was sure the level of study would be far beyond my capabilities. Finishing with a Distinction encouraged me to go further, setting me up for the top up course and helping me to achieve my First.
Would you recommend this college and this course to others?
I would recommend this college and particularly this course to others who, like me, need an industry specific perspective, and to anyone who thinks that higher education is out of their reach.
