About you and background
My name is Alicia Quarterly and I’m 18 years of age. I’m from Tir-Y-Berth.
What course did you study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
I am currently studying the BTEC Health & Social Care level 3 course. I’m on the second year after completing last year.
What made you decide to study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
I had already tried studying AS levels at sixth form but failed most of them and was then deciding whether to go back and re-sit the year when I found that this course is another way to get into nursing at university. I feel that this way of learning, with other assessments rather than just exams, suits me better than sixth form did.
Why did you choose to study this course?
I chose to study this course because when I looked online it said that this course would help me to get into university to study nursing.
What are the benefits of studying at Coleg y Cymoedd?
The college is only about a 5-10 minute drive from my house so it is convenient for me. Also the tutors are really helpful and encourage you to do well on the course.
What do you intend to do next?
I have now applied to do adult nursing at university, and already have two conditional offers from Bristol and Birmingham. I intend to go to university and become an adult nurse.
How is the course helping you achieve your ambitions?
This course is helping me because my tutors encourage me to work hard and show me what can be achieved when I do. It is because of this course that I have had university offers and am now able to go as long as I get the grades I need. The course has already allowed me to get a Distinction and Distinction* in the first year and I am on target to achieve triple Distinction* at the end of the course.
How will studying impact on your life?
Studying this course has considerably increased my confidence, at the beginning of the course I was very shy and being around the girls on my course/my course tutor Karen has really helped me to come out of my shell and show my personality. It has definitely given me better career opportunities as there are many different professions this course can help you get into. If I get to go to university it has helped me to fulfil the ambition of becoming a nurse because this is something I have always wanted to do.
Would you recommend this college/this course to others?
I would definitely recommend this college to others because all the staff are very friendly, especially my course tutor Karen who has really helped me get through the course. I would recommend the course to others, especially people who struggle with exams as coursework often suit them more like it did with me.
