My name is Felicity Davies, I am 18 years old and I am from Caerphilly.
What course did you study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
In September 2014 I studied Health and Social Care Level 2 for 1 year and then the following year I went on to study Health and Social Care Level 3 and I am now in my 2nd and final year.
What made you decide to study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
When I was in my final year of comprehensive I decided that I did not want to progress onto sixth form and study three different topics that were not relevant to me, I wanted to study one subject that I knew I wanted to do and a subject that would help in the future, so I went on to the college website and had a look at the courses that were available.
Why did you choose to study this course?
I had always thought about being a nurse from a young age so when I saw that the college had a health and social care course to offer I took up the opportunity to study in this and applied for a place. After a couple of years of studying and after going on different placements I changed my mind on my chosen career for the future. I think it was studying the Unit Caring for Children and Young People that made me decide that Social Work was the career for me as I enjoyed learning all about Child Protection.
What are the benefits of studying at Coleg y Cymoedd?
One of the benefits of studying at Coleg Y Cymoedd is that it is local and is accessible. The teaching staff are friendly and the course suited my requirements exactly.
What do you intend to do next/what are you doing now that you have left?
I have applied to University to do the Social Work Degree.
How is the course helping you achieve your ambitions?
This course has helped me achieve my ambitions as it has helped me get all the qualifications I need for university and has also given me the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of health and social care settings as I have undertaken a range of placements. My tutor also told everyone at the start of the course to undertake volunteer work within their local community so I have been working with Guides and Rainbows. Because I followed her guidance I now have fulfilled the required number of hours to enable me to undertake the training to become a social worker.
How will studying impact on your life?
Studying on this course has definitely helped me increase my confidence. It has also given me plenty of career opportunities and is helping me fulfil my ambition in becoming a professional social worker.
Would you recommend this college/this course to others?
I would definitely recommend the college to others especially the Health and Social Care Level 3 course because the tutors especially Karen Stratford-Davies & Gill Tyler on this course have been a massive help not just me but to everyone in my class by helping us and pushing us all to get the grades that we need in order to achieve and also by helping us apply for university to further our education.
Your tutor Karen Stratford-Davies said:
"Felicity has worked really hard to achieve the academic qualifications and vocational experience to progress on to University. It just goes to show that education does not end at aged 16 and in school. With the right support, guidance and enthusiasm students can achieve their goals and I believe that staff at the college commit to their students 100%."
