About you and background
My name is David Carroll, I’m 22 year olds and live in Taffs Well, Cardiff.
What course did you study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
BTEC Extended Diploma in Public Services (Uniformed).
What made you decide to study at Coleg y Cymoedd?
I was always interested in the public services, and had an interest and curiosity of Customs & Excise, and I initially wanted to pursue my career in that pathway.
Why did you choose to study this course?
I was informed about this Public Service course from friends who were currently studying the course, and they told me how interesting and motivating this course was, and also how supportive and helpful the tutors were at Coleg y Cymoedd in helping them in their progression to achieve their goals and ambitions in their relative course.
What are the benefits of studying at Coleg y Cymoedd?
The benefits of studying at this college are, that within the Public Service course that I was studying with Sue Underwood-Gibbs and Rachel Roberts as my tutors, they gave us a huge insight into all aspects of public services and the course had variety with numerous visits from guest speakers, giving us their knowledge and experience of public services. This course also gave us, again numerous educational trips to various public service occupations as visits to the prison service and also armed forces, giving us as students a huge insight into these occupations. Whilst all along Sue Underwood-Gibbs and Rachel Roberts, are always available to assist you with all and any knowledge and information that you would need to progress further in this course.
What are you doing now that you have left?
Since passing the course with a distinction, I am now studying a BA (Hons) Sports Development Degree at University of South Wales. At the end of my degree this year, I will be studying a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at Coleg y Cymoedd in order to become a Public Services & Sports tutor. I will achieve my dream of becoming a tutor/teacher due to the initial support and encouragement I received from Sue Underwood-Gibbs and Rachel Roberts, which enabled me to further my education.
How is the course helping you achieve your ambitions?
From achieving my BTEC in Public Services, this then gave me sufficient UCAS points to enable me to attain a place on present degree course, which was always my intention. This would not have been possible without the support of my two tutors, and Coleg y Cymoedd.
How will studying impact on your life?
This course has given me a better insight into the public services sector, which has given a greater confidence in myself. This course has also allowed me to further my educational career, which will give me a far greater opportunity to pursue my teaching career.
Would you recommend this college and course to others?
I would highly recommend this college and course to all, as I have found both college and tutors to be a superb teaching environment, and again would highly recommend this college.

David started the Public Service course as a shy, quiet boy who had ambitions to work for Custom and Excise. David quickly showed great determination and motivation in all aspects of the course, throughout his studies he always gave 100%.
During the course although strong academically David showed a preference to the more fitness based subjects within the course and went on to obtain a degree in Sport Science and is now a student at the College studying the Post Graduate Certificate in Education in pursuit of a career in teaching Sport and Public services.
David is an excellent example of how a student can progress into a worthwhile career following the Public Service Course.
