This 2-3 years course introduces you to costume construction within the areas of film and theatre. There are excellent links with the industry providing opportunities to work as part of a production team in the role of the costume maker. The course will prepare you with the necessary skills to become a specialist in the field.
You will require 2 A Levels and a portfolio equal to 180 UCAS points and or relevant industrial experience. Entry to the final/top up year for the BA (Hons) will be on successful completion of the Foundation Degree. Application for the BA (Hons) should be done through the UCAS site using code W453.
Those without such qualifications are considered on an individual basis and a wide range of prior experience may be taken into account. All applicants will receive a portfolio-based interview.
What Will I Study
You will need creative flair and an ability to use your design knowledge and creative skills to interpret ideas. The study of costume within its historical context is an integral part of the course and research into period costume will provide reference and aid throughout the interpretative process.
The acquisition of specialist skills such as pattern cutting, garment construction and surface embellishment will equip you with the essential knowledge needed to begin the process of costume construction. Specialist areas such as corsetry, tailoring, beadwork and embroidery will be introduced throughout the course extending and enriching your expertise.
The course will offer you an insight into the professional world of film and theatre with external industrial visits and work placement opportunities across a broad range of film / theatre companies nationwide. This will provide you with the experience of applying skills and knowledge and working both within a team and independently in a professional environment.
