FT Registration Fee - £30.00

Please Note - These fees are for the 2018/19 Academic Year and are subject to change annually. Fees are payable for each year of study. Days, Times and Fees for Part Time and HE courses are subject to change. HE Tuition Fees will be confirmed April 2018.

Learners attending Care and Childcare courses need to purchase a £ 11.00 polo shirt to wear at placement and to pay for a DBS check.

Course Outline

This course provides the knowledge and practical skills necessary for working in a variety of Childcare settings.

You will be taught in college for two days per week and the remaining three days will be spent in work placement, applying theory into practice as you need to show competence in both knowledge and skills. You will be visited regularly and assessed working directly with children.

Entry requirements

You will require 5 GCSEs at grades A*- C, including English/Welsh and Maths, or completion of a full relevant vocational programme at Level 2 which must also include GCSE English/Welsh and Maths at grades A*-C or equivalent such as Level 2 ESW Communications and Application of Number. Plus satisfactory references

You must have satisfactory clearance with the Disclosure and Barring Service .You will be invited to attend an interview. During this interview, you will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required.

What will I study?

Learners must achieve a minimum of 65 credits to achieve the CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development (Wales and Northern Ireland) (QCF). These will be a combination of mandatory and optional units which reflect your work role.

Learners are required to undertake 700 hours of work placement within a variety of real work environments. The requirement cannot be met by time spent with children within a learner’s family/extended family, babysitting or through other informal arrangements.

You will study a range of units, such as Child Development from 0 -19 years, Observation & Assessment, Play, Planning to meet the requirements of the curriculum, Safeguarding and working in partnership with parents and professionals. In addition to these units, you will study the Essential Skill of Communication.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed using a range of methods, which will include written assignments and practical assessment in work placement.

Career Opportunities and Progression

After successfully completing this course, you will be able to apply for employment within a childcare setting, e.g. schools, nurseries, special schools, day-care centres, hospitals or working for private families as a nanny, or progress to the Level 3 Extended Diploma for Children’s Care, Learning and Development, which will allow you to undertake courses/degrees in Higher Education.
