This course offers you the opportunity to study the theoretical and practical aspects of applied science. The course provides a broad base for those wishing to study science and prepare for a future Level 3 Science qualification.
You will require 4 GCSEs at grades A*- D including Maths, English and Science, or suitable experience.
You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.
Applicants with appropriate experience, who do not necessarily meet the academic qualifications, may be considered.
What will I study?
You will study ten units/modules, these will include: Chemistry & our Earth; Energy & our Universe; Biology & our environment; Applications of chemical substances; Health Applications of life sciences; Practical Scientific Project ; Working in a science-based organisation; Chemical analysis and detection; Exploring our Universe; Science in the World.
You will also study essential skills in Communication, ICT, and numeracy and have the opportunity to resit GCSE Maths and English.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed in all units by completing set assignment work, laboratory reports and the completion of vocational assignment. You will also be expected to maintain your course files and your Essential Skills portfolios to the required standards.
Career Opportunities and Progression
On successful completion of this course you will have a qualification equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grade A*-C, greatly enhancing your future opportunities. You may be able to progress onto a level 3 Applied Science course or gain employment as a laboratory assistant.
