This course offers you the opportunity to study the theoretical and practical aspects of laboratory science. The course provides a broad base for those wishing to study science and prepare for a career in science or progression to higher education to undertake a degree level course.
It is also relevant to assistant and practising technicians who want to enhance their skills experience and knowledge. Alongside this course you will also study the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate, which is equivalent to 1 A level.
You will require 5 GCSEs at grades A*- C including English, Maths and at least one Science subject, or a Level 2 Diploma in Applied Science at distinction level, or recent, relevant experience.
You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.
Applicants with appropriate experience, who do not necessarily meet the academic qualifications, may be considered.
What will I study?
You will study nineteen units/modules across the two years if you continue onto the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma. In the first year these will include: Fundamentals of science; Scientific practical techniques; Environmental science; Plant & soil science; Industrial applications of chemical reactions; Physiology of human body systems; Energy changes and Maths for science.
For the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate you will explore a wide range of areas including how Wales fits in with Europe and the rest of the world, the health of the nation and how to be enterprising..
You will also complete Essential skills in Communication, ICT and Application of number.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed in all units by completing set assignment work, laboratory reports and the completion of vocational assignment s. You will also be expected to maintain your course files and your Key Skills portfolios to the required standards.
Career Opportunities and Progression
Successful learners could progress onto the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science. If moving into employment, there are excellent career opportunities as a technician/trainee in all fields of science.
