This qualification focuses on practical skills and knowledge. You will gain experience and some expectation of the situations that you could face in a job role within the engineering sector.
It covers the foundation level (year 1) and intermediate level (year 2) knowledge and understanding of electrical and electronic engineering.
You will require 3 GCSEs at grades A*- E including Maths & English. You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.
What will I study?
You will study a number of level 1 units. Electrical circuits: understand electrical circuits and the alternating current supply. Electronics: understand the behaviours of resistors, electromagnets, capacitors, semiconductors and how to undertake electrical measurements.
Handling and using electronic components and tools: recognise, select and understand the use and limitations of common components and tools associated with electronics and electrical work.
Electronic systems and information: understand every day electronic/electrical devices as a system made up of a number of sub-systems and how they can be represented by block diagrams.
How will I be assessed?
Your practical competences will be continually assessed and you will sit a multiple-choice examination.
Career Opportunities and Progression
On successful completion of this course you could progress to a Certificate/Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Technology. Having developed the fundamental practical skills and a basic understanding of electrical and electronic concepts, employment opportunities could be sought in the field of Instrumentation and Electronic Control, such as petro chemical, gas and water distribution along with Electronic Assembly and Automation.
