You will be required to purchase Uniform (T Shirt and Trousers), safety boots & safety glasses (approx £55). Please discuss this at interview stage with a tutor after you have applied.

Course Outline

This BTEC Extended Certificate is an academic, practical and work related course. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. The course covers the basic knowledge and technical practical skills, providing a good foundation for future career opportunities, or progression onto a more advanced work-related qualification.

You will also study units of an NVQ Level 1 Certificate in Performing Engineering Operations, to supplement your theoretical studies. Alongside this course you will also study the Welsh Baccalaureate.

Entry requirements

You will require 4 GCSEs at grades A*- D including Maths, English & Science, or a Level 1 qualification with the appropriate selection of units.

You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.

What will I study?

The BTEC Extended Certificate is made up of the following units: The Engineering World, Investigating an Engineering Product, Computer Aided Engineering, Machining Techniques, Interpreting and Using Engineering Information, Mathematics for Engineering, Electrical and Mechanical Science for Engineering, Operating an Efficient Workplace and Computer Numerical Control Programming.

The NVQ level 1 qualification is made up of 2 practical units of from: Bench Fitting, Centre Lathe Turning and Milling.

For the Welsh Baccalaureate you will explore a wide range of areas including how Wales fits in with Europe and the rest of the world, the health of the nation and how to be enterprising. The Welsh Baccalaureate also provides the opportunity to study Essential Skills Wales qualification at an appropriate level.

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed by a range of methods, including practical projects, on-line assessment, assignments and course work. Your portfolio will be graded with an overall grade for the qualification awarded.

Career Opportunities and Progression

On successful completion of this course you will have the opportunity to progress onto the BTEC level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering or the VRQ level 3 Certificate in Engineering Technology. However this is subject to a grading board and interview. Many learners have gained apprenticeships following the successful completion of this course.
