Purchase of steel toe capped boots, overalls and a course text book is required for this course. Please discuss this at interview stage with a tutor after you have applied.
This is a one year full-time course and is equivalent to one GCE A level. The extended certificate is designed for those who would like to pursue a career in the technical and professional areas of the construction industry for example; Architectural design, Building maintenance & surveying, Quantity surveying, Site Management and Civil engineering.
You will be introduced to the employment opportunities available in the construction industry, enabling you to choose your preferred area of work, and if already in employment, to progress to a more responsible job or prominent position within your chosen field.
You will need 5 GCSEs at grades A*- C including English, Maths and Science or another appropriate Level 2 qualification. You will also undertake a formal interview and college devised initial assessment in literacy and numeracy.
What will I study?
The Extented Certificate consists of four modules.
You will gain an understanding of the underlying principles and practice of design and construction for low and medium rise buildings and structures.
The additional two subjects could include the following: Construction Technology, Building Technology, Surveying in Construction.
In addition you will examine the construction methods used in the construction of new buildings and their associated external works. Emphasis is placed on you gaining employability skills: such as research skills, team work, presentation skills which play an important part of the course.
How will I be assessed?
Learners will complete a range of practical tasks, written assignments and examinations. Each module is graded with an overall Pass, Merit or Distinction.

• Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (Top-up)
• Foundation degree or HNC in Sustainable Construction and Surveying
