The Level 3 in Art & Design is a three A Level equivalent course. You are able to gain in skills and confidence within a supportive environment created by well-qualified and committed staff, as well as having access to excellent facilities and resources. The one year course offers you an opportunity to specialist skills and visual awareness through a structured programme of 2D and 3D work, with the emphasis on experimentation and exploration
The practical work is supported by a programme of Contextual Studies, enabling you to understand the place of art, craft and design in the workplace and contemporary society. Regular visits to museums and galleries are undertaken. The course builds a portfolio of your work and prepares you for interview to progress onto degree level or enter the work place in the Creative Industries.
3 AS Level equivalents or a BTEC Level 3 Diploma at merit grade in a creative related subject.
You will be invited to attend an interview with a portfolio of your art/ design work. You will also be required to undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.
What will I study?
The course builds a portfolio of specialist creative skills and working in a range of media and techniques in both 2 & 3 dimensions. You will gain an excellent grounding in traditional techniques as well as computer technology. You will be encouraged to explore and develop art and design ideas and produce effective outcomes. You will work through set briefs to complete units of specialist Art and Design culminating in a project to lead on to your specialist pathway for HE degree or employment.
Graphic Arts: This covers graphic design, photography, illustration, painting and printmaking.
Fashion & Textiles: which covers pattern cutting and garment construction techniques for fashion and costume, surface pattern, fabric manipulation, paper & printmaking in textiles; illustration and design.
3D Design: this includes furniture, product, spatial & theatre design, graphic presentation techniques and design craft techniques
How will I be assessed?
There is continuous assessment throughout the course for practical and written assignments. All units are internally assessed and externally moderated. On successful completion of this qualification an overall grade is given of Pass, Merit or Distinction, converting into UCAS points ready for your pathway application to Higher Education.
Career Opportunities and Progression
On successful completion of this course you could further your studies with a Foundation Degree or BA Hons Degree course. Employment opportunities exist on a free-lance or employee basis through Apprenticeships or employment.
