Course Outline

The BTEC Certificate is a 1-year practical work related course introducing the skills needed to work as a makeup trainee for the media industry. Learning is achieved by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations.

You will be designing and producing the makeup and hair for particular characters in productions. Working on 'live' theatrical productions enables you to produce work towards a professional portfolio. It is the equivalent of an AS Level.

Entry requirements

You will require at least one of the following: A BTEC First Diploma in a related subject or 4 GCSEs at grades A*- C preferably including English and Maths.

You will be invited to attend an interview with a portfolio of your work. You will also be required to undertake an initial assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required.

What will I study?

The course is made up of 3 units, Units include: Make-up & Hair Design and Application, Production Workshop& Production Planning; Special Effects and Prosthetics.

How will I be assessed?

There is continuous assessment throughout the course for practical and written assignments. All units are internally assessed and externally moderated. On successful completion of this qualification an overall grade is given of Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Career Opportunities and Progression

BTEC Certificates are valued by employers and higher Education Institutes, (Universities and colleges) After completion of this course you could further your studies with a BTEC National Subsidiary Diploma/ Diploma course. Employment opportunities exist on a free-lance or employee basis through Apprenticeships or employment.
