Course Outline

The course is accredited by Agored Cymru, and learners will achieve between 10 and 12 credits at Entry Level 3.

Entry requirements

This course is designed for people who want to continue learning Welsh as a second language. So all you need is to have completed the Year 4 course, and a continuing enthusiasm for learning (and practising!) Welsh.

What will I study?

You will learn vocabulary and language-patterns covering a variety of more in-depth day-to-day conversational scenarios, for example, expanding your range of day-to-day topics, how to express congratulations/sympathy, how to use the passive voice (a very commonly-used pattern in spoken and written Welsh). You will also build on your writing skills during this phase of study, e.g. writing letters and filling in questionnaires.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will be undertaken in class through tutor- observation of your oral, written and listening skills. It is an informal way of learning, with no exams, and involving pair/group work with your class-colleagues as well as interaction with your tutor.

Career Opportunities and Progression

On successful completion of the course you will be able to progress on to our Welsh Year 6 course. In terms of career opportunities, even basic Welsh is considered favourably by most employers in Wales. After 5 years of learning, you will be at a reasonable level of conversational fluency, and will have developed basic reading and writing skills too, thus increasing your employability. Welsh language skills are also useful if your children/grand-children are attending Welsh-medium school and you want to keep up with them/help them with their homework!
