This subject is part of the full time A level Programme. To apply for this subject you need to apply for the A Level or Combined Programme A Level Programme - You will need to choose 3 or 4 AS Levels to study the A Level Programme Combined Programme - You will need to choose 1 or 2 AS Levels combined with a vocational option. Vocational options include: Applied Science, IT, Business, Criminology, Law, Sports and Exercise Sciences, or Health and Social Care.

Course Outline

Studying combined English Language and Literature will challenge and entertain you helping you to understand the influences on the heritage of the English language. You will also be encouraged to make creative and informed responses to each of the major literacy genres of poetry, prose and drama and a range of non-literary texts.

You will have guided reading as well as being encouraged to read in your own time. You will learn to analyse how spoken English is represented in both literary and non-literary contexts. This will help you to understand how language functions as a medium of communication and help you improve your own skills of analysis and self-expression.

Entry requirements

You will require 5 GCSEs at Grades A*- C including English Language.

You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.

What will I study?

For AS Level you will study: An anthology of poetry chosen by the WJEC, How to produce effective creative writing, Close analysis of written texts and Drama and non-literary texts.

For A2 Level you will study: A Shakespeare play, A prose text from a prescribed list, Critical and creative genre study and Comparative analysis of unseen texts, one of which will be spoken language.

How will I be assessed?

At AS Level you will be assessed by means of 2 examinations. (Each 20% of the qualification). At A2 Level you will be assessed by 2 examinations. (Each 20% of the qualification). Plus, coursework: 2500-3000 words based on a critical and sustained study of a prose genre and a piece of related original creative writing linked to the genre studied for Section A. (20% of qualification).

Career Opportunities and Progression

On successful completion of this course many learners apply to and are offered places at university to study a variety of subjects which have been introduced at A Level, in more depth at degree level. You could also move onto an apprenticeship or into employment.
