In an ever-changing world engineers and technicians need to gain both knowledge and skills related to several disciplines.
This course will enable you to operate and communicate more effectively over a wide range of engineering activities.
You will require a Level 3 qualification (A BTEC or Diploma) in a suitable field of engineering.
Learners who do not meet the academic qualifications but have relevant experience will be considered.
What will I study?
In your first year you will study four modules. The module Electronics and Principles will cover complex quantities, circuit theory, tuned circuits and digital electronic circuits. The Mathematics module will include Matrices, Complex numbers, Solving equations, Factorisation, Radian measure, Calculus, Statistics, Probability and Matlab.
The module Introduction to C Programming & Embedded Systems will cover the following; Basics of program writing, arrays, qualifiers, variable scope functions, pointers and arrays. Introduction to embedded systems, typical applications, architecture and essential components. The module Programmable Logic Controllers will focus on an Over view of PLC technology, range of PLC’s, applications, ladder logic and control structures using basic functionality.
In your second year you will study two modules. The first module Design of Electrical Installations will include 17th Edition regulations, electrical supply systems, protection, isolation, equipment rating. The second module Introduction to Quality & Environmental Management includes Quality management systems, legislation, customer care and the law, reliability, six sigma, reliability and auditing.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed periodically in each unit of study. Your assessments will be varied and depend on the module being studied. Assessments generally take the form 100% course work or 50% course work and 50% end of unit examination.
Career Opportunities and Progression
On successful completion of the HNC, you could progress onto a Foundation Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering which acts as an entry qualification for the BSc (Hons) at The University of South Wales. You will have acquired the knowledge and training to be able to meet the needs of the modern industrial and commercial environment. On successful completion of this course you will be receive a University of South Wales award.
