"The Foundation Degree in Childhood Studies is the best thing I have done. With my first year nearly over and going into the next I have never had such high marks in a university level course and I am enjoying every minute of it. Working in a special school it has given me more knowledge on many subjects regarding children in both mainstream and special needs. The staff are fantastic and really supportive, I am looking forward to starting the second year."

Kayleigh Moulden - Foundation Degree in Childhood Studies

"I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who is willing to work hard and go on to child lead professions as this is the perfect stepping stone and the staff at the college are fantastic!"

Rachel Borstal - Foundation Degree in Childhood Studies

"The course I am studying includes topics highly relevant to my company and job sector. The facilities are great, and the teaching staff are informative yet approachable."

Andrew Edmunds - Foundation Degree Electrical and Electronic Engineering

"I now have a better understanding and knowledge of the construction industry as a whole. This course has provided me with greater opportunities to progress with my career. On completion of the Foundation Degree I am hoping to continue to study and gain a BSc in Construction Management."

Carlie French - Foundation Degree in Sustainable Construction and Surveying

“I enjoy studying at the College as it is local and informal, plus its convenient studying part-time in the evenings as I work full-time. The course has expanded my knowledge of software which I am able to put into practice in my job. It is also endorsing the practical skills I have gained through the years by giving me a qualification in information communication technology.”

Kathryn Price - Foundation Degree in Information Communication Technology

“For me, the highlights of the course were the amount of invaluable work experience plus the care and attention tutors gave you individually. They were very hands on and pushed you to achieve your best. The expert guest tutors also gave a whole new learning experience which was exciting and valuable. I love the work experience I undertook in the theatre and this later turned into paid work. This course has helped me begin to achieve my dreams.”

Katharine Barry - Foundation Degree in Costume Construction for Screen and Stage

“I just want to say what an amazing course this really is, the teachers are amazing, very professional and you cannot go wrong on this course if you have a strong interest in photography. This course helped prepare me practically and academically, I owe a big thank you to this course, institution and its tutors.”

Robert Guy - Foundation Degree in Photography

What Employers Say about our learners

“On attending the HNC Building Technology Management learner project presentations and thought all the students did a really great job. I was really impressed with the professional approach they all made to the delivery of the proposed design scheme of the St John’s Ambulance Station and I am sure they will all do well in their future careers in the construction industry.”

Al Koursaros - Business Lecturer

Which part of the course do you enjoy teaching most?

I particularly enjoy teaching strategy as part of the strategic management second year module, Strategic Business Analysis. It’s an exciting, dynamic module that gives me a chance to connect with students and encourage their thoughts and growing perceptions on how strategy in business today can make or break organisations.

What kind of jobs could students go on to do after studying this course?

Our students typically already come from both private and public sector backgrounds and often as a result of the Foundation Degree in Business Studies course progress within their current organisations, gaining promotion and positive recognition for the depth and breadth of experience they have gained from the course. Additionally we find that students advance into careers in roles such as marketing, retail management, human resources and finance.

Are there any misconceptions about the industry that you’d like to see change?

Business is often thought of as being a little boring with few and far between opportunities for success within it. This viewpoint couldn’t be further from the truth. Today business is prevalent in all aspects of society and the workplace. New business start-ups and entrepreneurships offer tangible opportunities for progression with a view to independence as well as career progression. What could be more exciting than being your own boss!

What did you do before teaching?

I followed a successful career for 18 years in both private and public sector organisations holding down senior management roles in the logistics, retail and home computing sectors.

What are people always surprised to learn about you?

I have a passion for all things VW Camper van and own a 1972 Bay Window Australian Kombi touring caravan. I’ve owned it now for about five years and really enjoy doing it up and going on camping trips to West Wales in it with my family.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Helping students to both successfully complete their course as well as developing their own vital business acumen and far reaching skills. I draw a great sense of satisfaction in being part of this process.

What’s the one piece of advice you would give to your 18 year old self?

I would make a plan for my future and not just work hard to achieve it but work harder still, as well as have fun along the way.

Which business person do you admire?

It’s got to be Sir Richard Branson. He is so creative, sustainable and his business ideas push the Virgin brand beyond the ‘envelope’ making it one of the most recognised in our nation. He is also a great philanthropist.

Shan Bowen - Childhood Studies Lecturer

What do you teach at Coleg y Cymoedd?

I have been teaching for 20 years. During this time I have taught child care to learners studying courses from Level 1 to Level 5.

What is your greatest achievement during your time with us?

My achievements are vast and varied! Since working at Coleg y Cymoedd I have become a grandmother which I consider my biggest achievement. My work achievements range from teaching and supporting students, who enter college with no qualification to graduate with a Foundation Degree in Childhood Studies

A particularly memorable and proud experience was seeing a student achieve a UHOVI student of the year award.  Personal achievements I am proud of are being nominated by students for a Pearson Teacher’s Award and by my manager for a University Award for ‘Excellence in Teaching and Learning’.

Tell us about your career and experience in Industry

I have had an enjoyable and varied career working in the field of Child Care. My employment experience ranges from working with babies in day care, young children in a school setting and teenagers in a women’s refuge.

Tell us about your qualifications

I possess:-

A Fellowship and Recognised Teaching Status from University of South Wales.

A Masters Degree in Early Years from Trinity College Carmarthen.

PGCE in Further and Adult Education from Carleon University.

An Advanced Diploma in Child Care and Education (Cache).

A NNEB (National Nursery Examination Board) qualification.

Something interesting about you
