Public Services

Take a service call from the professionals! Have you always wanted to be involved with helping people when they most need it, but are unsure which of the uniformed or emergency services would suit you best?

Our Public Services courses will prepare you for your career in uniform whether it’s in the Police, Ambulance, Fire or Armed Services. Throughout the course you will gain the qualifications, skills and competencies you need to help you prepare for your recruitment process. You might even decide to use the experience and qualifications you gain to move onto a university course.

You will have the chance to take part in many practical training sessions and role play. You may be able to visit a Royal Navy ship, go on exercises with South Wales police, attend the ‘Look at life’ days with the Royal Marines plus trips to local fire stations.

As well as learning about law and criminology. Visits from serving members of the Police, Army, Fire Service and others gives you an insight into the day to day work of the professionals in your chosen area.

Public Services

What is your greatest achievement during your time with us?

My greatest achievement personally happened while working with Public Services - this was successfully climbing a mountain,: albeit it was only Pen-y-Fan but anyone who knows me would vouch for the fact that I am not normally a lover of anything that energetic.  I have climbed it twice since and today I am far more physically active and much more health conscious - this is a direct result of working on this course with the team.   Academically my greatest achievement was successfully gaining a Master’s Degree in 2012.

Tell us about your career and experience in Industry

I have had a varied career since leaving school at 16.  I started off like most people of my era working on a Government Scheme which quickly led me into full time employment.  I have always been ambitious and this ambition has kept me driven over the past 37 years, I have run several business and been quite enterprising over the years – I enjoyed being my own boss and this suited my lifestyle until I decided to return to full time education at the college in 1996 where I achieved a post graduate degree in my first three years.  I suppose you can say I got bitten by the learning bug and I continue to learn and gain qualifications to this day.

Tell us about your qualifications

I have a strong portfolio of qualifications which allows me to bring different experiences into the course and the classroom.  I have a Master’s degree in Leadership and Management which is an asset for the employability units I deliver.  I also have a Honours Degree in Education and Training and I am a fully qualified further education qualified lecturer.

Something interesting about you

I have been the secretary of my local, senior rugby club on and off for the past 25 years this is a passion of mine – this activity/responsibility keeps very me busy most weekends.   I engage in a wide range of roles within this club which is invaluable to me in my teaching capacity giving me a range of practical experience to draw on.
