Coleg y Cymoedd joins panel to develop green skills in Welsh construction sector

As a leading construction education and training provider in Wales, Coleg y Cymoedd has joined the Green Construction Advisory Panel (GCAP).

Created by Exeter College in the Southwest two years ago, GCAP helps the construction industry acquire green skills to meet the UK’s net-zero carbon target by 2050, which is crucial for the economy and the environment.

Together with British Association of Construction Heads (BACH), GCAP aims to expand an existing and effective template model, and replicate it across the UK, setting up successful GCAPs in Wales, Scotland and Northen Ireland in the next three years.

By being part of the Welsh GCAP, Coleg y Cymoedd will benefit from the knowledge and experience of other panel members, such as employers, manufacturers, training providers and regional stakeholders. The panel will also foster sharing best practice, innovation and solutions for green construction challenges and opportunities.

Mike Blakeley of Exeter College and GCAP said: “GCAP has influenced our approach to Green Skills, careers engagement and collaboration with the colleges approach to supporting Net Zero Aims. It grew from 12 founder members to over 160 and advancing into a national support network is a natural evolution. We are excited by our partnership with BACH and know the impact will be significant and positive.”

BACH, the membership organisation for construction training providers in England and Wales, has supported GCAP and its transferable approach. BACH President, Graham Hasting-Evans, said: “To address the climate change challenge we need a big change in skills across the construction workforce, affecting existing and new green jobs.

“This cannot be run from the centre; local areas and employers are better placed to drive the modular changes needed in a practical way.  GCAP has shown the benefit of this bottom-up approach and we at BACH are happy to support rolling this out across the UK.”

Coleg y Cymoedd Assistant Principal for Business Services, Matthew Tucker, said: “We are pleased to join BACH and GCAP and take part in this important initiative. As a college, we want to provide high-quality construction training that meets the industry needs and the green agenda and have our own plans to open Netzero and Retrofit facility in the future. With GCAP, we can access the latest knowledge and resources to improve our curriculum and ready our learners for the future of construction.”
