Level 3 Academy: Computer Science

This is a broad and evolving qualification, and you will have to complete a range of units, be organised, submit challenging, subject-relevant assessments and manage your time carefully. Our experienced and committed subject tutors will support you to develop a range of skills on this qualification.


Whatever your plans are for the future – whether you decide to study further, go on to work or an apprenticeship, or set up your own business this will be your passport to success in the next stage of your life. All full-time learners will be expected to attend skills sessions as well as their chosen vocational course. You will also be asked to attend tutorial sessions as part of your full-time course timetable.

What Will I Learn?

Over the course of two years, you will study a range of modules relating to various aspects of computing, this will include topics such as:


• Creating Systems to Manage Data • Computer Games Development • Digital 2D and 3D Graphics • Programming • The Internet of Things • Website Development • Using Social Media in Business • Information Technology Systems • Cyber Security and Incident Management • IT Project Management • IT Service Delivery • Data Modelling • Software Testing

Entry Requirements

You will require 5 GCSEs at grades A*- C (including Maths and English/Welsh first language) or a Level 2 Diploma in Computing/IT with GCSE Maths/Numeracy and/or GCSE English Language/Welsh (First Language) at Grade C or above, or related vocational qualification with suitability experience.


You will be invited to attend an interview and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required. At Coleg y Cymoedd we would encourage you to do the very best that you can in your assessments. The better your grades the more options you will have and may result in you gaining entry onto a higher-level course.

Assessment

Within the first year of the course, you will complete six units of work. Two of these units will be externally assessed. In the second year of the course there will be an additional seven units of work to complete. Two of these units will be externally assessed.

Career Progression

Completion of the Level 3 Extended Diploma qualifies for UCAS points (equivalent to 3 A’ levels), giving students a wide choice of progression options. You can go on to university, an apprenticeship or employment and continue to develop your IT career. There is also the opportunity to continue your study within Coleg Y Cymoedd, where we offer Foundation Degrees in both ICT and Games Technology (franchised from USW). Possible career opportunities in the Games Development/IT industry could include: • Games Designer/Developer • Web Designer/Developer • Systems/IT Support Technician • Emerging Digital Technology Practitioner • Software Designer • App Developer • Cyber Security Analyst
