Foundation Degree in Education, Learning and Development

You will study the professional aspects of working within this sector, from communication with colleagues and other organisations to health, educational theories, legislation and children’s rights.
Additionally, study skills and reflective practice will be covered to support own professional development

Year One Modules - (80 credits):
• Academic Skills and Reflective Practice (20 credits)
• Learning and Cognition (20 credits)
• Language Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy (40 credits)

Year Two Modules - (80 credits):
• Introduction to Additional Learning Needs (20 credits)
• Health Wellbeing and Resilience (20 credits)
• Reflective Practice (20 credits)
• Curricula (20 credits)

Year Three Modules- (80 credits):
• Research Project (40 credits)
• Inclusive Practice (20 credits)
• Child and Adolescent Mental Health (20 credits)

You should possess a relevant Level 3 qualification (such as NCFE/CACHE Supporting Teaching Learning, CCLD, DCE , BTEC Health & Social Care (others may be considered) with good literacy and numeracy skills; preferably with a C grade GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths, or two A Levels. Mature applicants lacking formal entry requirements but with relevant experience will also be considered.

A minimum of 12 hours practical experience per week is expected of all candidates; therefore you need to hold a position, either in a paid or voluntary capacity, within a setting for the duration of the course. Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be required.

You will be assessed through written assignments, work-based reports, portfolios, presentations and a standardised multi-choice question paper (MCQ).

Those who complete the Foundation Degree can be offered the opportunity to progress to Level 6 BA (Hons) in Education Learning and Development at Coleg Y Cymoedd (Ystrad Mynach campus) or other Top-up Degree programmes at the University of South Wales.
Alternatively, using skills developed and experience gained, you can exit with a Foundation Degree (Level 5) and work in your chosen area of occupation.
