Biology AS and A2

AS and A Level Biology will enhance your understanding and appreciation of living organisms, how they function and interact with one another.

You will study, discuss and research issues in the news with a focus on aspects of the ‘Living World’ such as Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Biodiversity and the Physiology of Body Systems. Activities include the planning of experiments and collection of data, the analysis of experimental results and the drawing of conclusions.

What Will I Learn?

There are 2 Units within AS Biology and 3 comprising the A2 Biology.

AS Unit One Basic Biochemistry and Cell Organisation. The molecular structure of biological molecules is investigated through practical and theoretical biochemistry including the arrangement of these molecules within cells. Cell ultrastructure and the function of the component parts, with tissue and organ structure is studied in plants and animals and contrasted with the structure of microorganisms and viruses. The genetic code and its roles in protein synthesis and nuclear division are also investigated. AS Unit Two Biodiversity and the Physiology of Body Systems. The evolutionary origins of biodiversity are contextually investigated within the traditional and modern systems of classification and through applying practical sampling techniques involved in measuring biodiversity. Natural selection and adaptations of organisms for gas exchange, transport and nutrition will also be studied. A2 Biology incorporates unit three, Energy, Homeostasis and the Environment and unit four entitled Variation, Inheritance, Immunology and Disease. Additionally, Unit 5 is a Practical Examination.

Entry Requirements

You will require 5 GCSEs at Grades A*- C including English/Welsh Language, plus a grade B in Maths and BB in Additional Science or B in GCSE Biology.

You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.

Assessment

You will be assessed by examinations and a practical examination.
