Media Studies AS and A2

Media and communications are among the world’s largest industries. This course begins the process of understanding what at first seems very familiar to us – television, films, radio, newspapers and magazines.

What Will I Learn?

At AS Level we learn how media forms are constructed and the importance of digital technology and media convergence. You will learn by deconstructing media texts such as magazine covers, film trailers, adverts, TV programmes & websites. You will also learn how these are interpreted by different audiences.

For the practical part of the course you will create your own media products, including magazine front covers and a magazine article. During A2, you will study three different media industries in depth: Film, gaming and television. We will analyse different media texts and apply media theories to specific texts. The coursework involves an extended research essay and a production pieces which can include DVD or CD covers and marketing material.

Entry Requirements

You will require 5 GCSEs at Grades A*- C including English/Welsh Language. You do not need to have studied Media at GCSE.

You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.
