French AS and A2

The A Level French course promotes enthusiasm for the French language and culture. It will help you develop an understanding of the language in a variety of contexts and to communicate confidently and effectively in French.


You will develop an awareness and understanding of the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of countries where French is spoken. You will consider the study of the language in a broader context preparing you to take their place in a multilingual global society

What Will I Learn?

AS topics include: Social Issues and trends; Family structures, traditional and modern values, friendships/relationships, youth trends, issues and personal identity, educational and employment opportunities. Political, intellectual and artistic culture; regional culture and heritage in France, French-speaking countries and communities, literature, art, film and music in the French-speaking world


A2 studies: Social issues and trends; migration and integration, cultural identity and marginalisation, cultural enrichment and celebrating difference, discrimination and diversity. Political, intellectual and artistic culture; France 1940-1950: The Occupation and post-war years. A film in French will be studied at AS and a literary text in French will be studied at A2

Entry Requirements

You will require 5 GCSEs at Grades A*- C including English/Welsh Language, and grade B or above in French.


You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.

Assessment

You will be assessed by an oral examination and a paper-based examination.

Career Progression

On successful completion of this course you may choose to study French at Higher Education; or a wide range of employment possibilities including the Civil Service, media, health and care services, translation, politics or the Police.

A Level Programme - You will need to choose 3 or 4 AS Levels to study the A Level Programme

Combined Programme - You will need to choose 1 or 2 AS Levels combined with a vocational option. Vocational options include: Applied Science, IT, Business, Criminology, Law, Sports and Exercise Sciences, or Health and Social Care.
