Criminology - WJEC Level 3 Certificate leading to Diploma

WJEC Level 3 Diploma in Criminology is a qualification with elements of Psychology, Law and Sociology that complements studies in humanities.


This is and Applied General qualification. The qualification would support learners’ progression from any study at Level 2, particularly GCSEs in Sociology, Law or Psychology.

What Will I Learn?

The course is made up of four units. The first unit will enable the learner to demonstrate understanding of different types of crime, influences on perceptions of crime and why some crimes are unreported.


The second unit will allow learners to gain an understanding of why people commit crime, drawing on what they have learned in Unit 1. The third unit will provide an understanding of the criminal justice system from the moment a crime has been identified to the verdict. Learners will develop the understanding and skills needed to examine information in order to review the justice of verdicts in criminal cases. In the final mandatory unit, learners will apply their understanding of the awareness of criminality, criminological theories and the process of bringing the accused to court in order to evaluate the effectiveness of social control to deliver criminal justice policy.

Entry Requirements

You will require 5 GCSEs at Grades A*- C including English/Welsh Language.


You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.

Assessment

You will be assessed by a combination of coursework and examination.

Career Progression

On successful completion of this course it would be expected that many learners would apply to and are offered places at university or enter employment within the criminal justice sector, social and probation work and Sociology and Psychology.

A Level Programme - You will need to choose 3 or 4 AS Levels to study the A Level Programme

Combined Programme - You will need to choose 1 or 2 AS Levels combined with a vocational option. Vocational options include: Applied Science, IT, Business, Criminology, Law, Sports and Exercise Sciences, or Health and Social Care.
