English Literature AS and A2

A-level English Literature focuses on the study of literary texts, investigating themes and characters, historical and biographical contexts, different interpretations by critics and other readers.

What Will I Learn?

In the first year you will study the poetry of Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes, a play (Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams) and a novel (Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë).


In the second year you will study the poetry of Christina Rossetti and a Shakespeare play (King Lear), as well as complete a coursework essay comparing one pre-2000 novel with one post-2000 novel.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs A*-C including at least B in English Literature and C in English Language

Assessment

First year: 2 exams; Second year: 2 exams plus coursework.

Undergraduate degree in English Literature, English Language, Creative Writing, Linguistics, Cultural Studies, Liberal Arts, Comparative Literature, amongst many others. Careers such as teaching, publishing, journalism, television, media, marketing and copywriting.
