Further Mathematics AS and A2 Level

The Further Mathematics course is a challenging qualification which both extends and deepens your knowledge and understanding beyond the standard A Level Mathematics.


As well as learning new areas of pure mathematics you will study further applications of mathematics in mechanics and statistics.

What Will I Learn?

In the AS you will complete GCE A Level Mathematics. The A Level Modules are Core 1, 2, 3 and 4 (C1-C4) and Mechanics 1 and 2 (M1-M2). These modules will cover a number of topics, including:


Surds, Algebra, Coordinate Geometry, Differentiation and Functions, Integration, Sequences and Series, Trigonometry, Exponentials and Logarithms, Equations of Circles, Arcs/Sectors/Segments, Integration, Trapezium Rule, Iterative Methods, Simpson’s Rule, Binomial Series, Volume of Revolution, Forces and Motion, Friction, Momentum and Impulse, Moments, Vectors and Differential Equations, Work, Energy and Power. In the second year (A2) you will complete Advanced GCE Further Mathematics. The Further Mathematics Modules are Further Pure Mathematics 1, 2 and 3, (FP1-FP3), Mechanics 3 (M3) and Statistics 1 and 2 (S1-S2). These modules will include: Mathematical Induction, Summation of a Finite Series, Complex Numbers, Polynomial Equations, Matrices, Derivatives, Partial Fractions, de Moivre’s Theorem, Trigonometric Equations, Real Functions, Conics, Integration, Hyperbolic Functions, Maclaurin and Taylor Series, Approximate Solutions of Equations, Polar Coordinates, Differential Equations, Motion, Impulse, Statics, Probability, Discrete and Continuous Random Variables, Binomial and Poisson Distribution, Uniform Distribution, Central Limit Theorem, Hypothesis Testing, Confidence Limits.

Entry Requirements

You will require 5 GCSEs at Grades A*- C including English Language, and a grade A in Mathematics.


You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.

Assessment

You will be assessed by 100% examination.

Career Progression

On successful completion of this course many students apply to and are offered places at university. Further Mathematics qualifications are highly regarded and are warmly welcomed by universities. Students who take Further Mathematics are really demonstrating a strong commitment to their studies, as well as learning mathematics that is very useful for any mathematically rich degree. Some prestigious university courses require you to have a Further Mathematics qualification and others may adjust their grade requirements more favourably to students with Further Mathematics.

A Level Programme - You will need to choose 3 or 4 AS Levels to study the A Level Programme

Combined Programme - You will need to choose 1 or 2 AS Levels combined with a vocational option. Vocational options include: Applied Science, IT, Business, Criminology, Law, Sports and Exercise Sciences, or Health and Social Care.
