Level 1 in Engineering Technologies (Mechanical)

The VRQ (vocationally related qualification) focusses on the practical aspects of Engineering. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.


You will also study a full QPEO Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations at level 1. In addition to these qualifications, you will also study, at an appropriate level, Essential Skills for Work & Life, Communication, Application of Number or GCSE English/Maths.

All full-time learners will be expected to attend skills sessions as well as their chosen vocational course. You will also be asked to attend tutorial sessions as part of your full-time course timetable.

What Will I Learn?

For the VRQ Certificate, you may study the following units:


• Introduction to Working in Engineering • Introduction to Machining Engineering Materials • Introduction to Basic Maths and Science used in Engineering • Introduction to Computer Aided Drawing (CAD)
For the QPEO Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations, you will complete the following units:

• Working safely in an engineering environment. • Carry out engineering activities efficiently and effectively • Using and communicating technical information • Making components using hand fitting tools and fitting techniques • Using lathes for turning operations

Entry Requirements

You will require 3 GCSEs at grades A*- E including Maths/Numeracy and English Language/Welsh (First Language).

Assessment

Assessment methods within this qualification include an on-screen multiple-choice examination for the mandatory unit and a Centre marked practical and theory assessments for the optional units. The on-screen multiple-choice examination is set by EAL and marked by EAL. The internal assessment is set by EAL and marked by members of the delivery team at the Centre.

Career Progression

Successful completion of the course provides an opportunity to progress onto the VRQ Level 2 Diploma in Engineering Technologies, but this is subject to a grading board and interview.

Further Notes

You will be required to purchase overalls and steel toe capped boots. Please discuss this at interview stage with a tutor after you have applied.
