Level 1 Engineering: Rail Track Maintenance

Improving and managing transport networks such as roads and railways is vital to keeping people, goods and services moving. It's a huge task that's essential to Britain’s economy.


This course is for anyone who wants to prove competence of the level of skills required of basic track operatives. This introductory qualification will enable them to access the trackside and work safely and effectively in routine work under close supervision. Usually basic track operatives will work with contractors or hired through agencies for specific duties. Due to the safety critical nature of the rail industry, it is important that they are able to prove their competence at this level, not only the knowledge but the practical skills required for the role as well. All full-time learners will be expected to attend skills sessions as well as their chosen vocational course. You will also be asked to attend tutorial sessions as part of your full-time course timetable.

What Will I Learn?

• Prepare to undertake duties in the rail industry • Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements • Dismantle and remove Permanent Way assets and components


• Install permanent way assets and components • Prepare small plant, measuring equipment and tools for Permanent Way renewal or maintenance • Reinstate the work site after Permanent Way engineering activities • Introduction to health and safety in construction • Setting out and laying gravel paths • Laying paving slabs/Laying block paving Constructing one brick walling • Mixing and using concrete

Entry Requirements

You will require 3 GCSEs at grades A*- E including Maths/Numeracy and English Language/Welsh (First Language).

Assessment

The course is assessed by a range of methods, including practical projects, assignments, case studies and course work. You will also have to complete on-line and paper based examinations set by the awarding organisations.

Career Progression

Successful completion of the course provides an opportunity to progress onto level 2 Rail Engineering programmes and/or employment within the Rail sector.

Further Notes

You will be required to purchase PPE/High Visibility workwear (£40) & steel toe capped boots. Please discuss this at interview stage with a tutor after you have applied.
