The emphasis on the course is 'learning by doing' and you will be given ample opportunity to develop the skills and techniques of a good teacher. The academic components of the course are modular based and include elements such as curriculum teaching and learning methods, planning and assessing learning plus option modules.
Learners are expected to make their own arrangements in order to obtain 100 hours supervised practical experience (teaching practice). This will be performed during the course of the two years.
You will be required to hold a recognised qualification in your chosen subject and be able to demonstrate relevant industrial, professional or commercial experience where appropriate.
The minimum qualification, unless your job role already requires you to teach, is NVQ level 3 or equivalent, depending on subject area and experience for professional certificate in education, a degree is required for professional graduate certificate in education.
You will be continuously assessed and you will be required to produce a variety of assignments. Your teaching ability will also be assessed throughout the course. There are no final examinations.
Successful completion of this course will enhance your career prospects in the field of post-compulsory education and training. The course may also encourage you to undertake further educational studies in your specific professional area.
