Cymoedd Alumnus secures Bronze at Paralympics

Former Cymoedd learner Thomas Matthews secured a Bronze medal at his Paralympic debut in Tokyo, in the Men’s Singles (Class1) Table Tennis competition.

Tom (29) from Cwmbach, Aberdare studied at the Ystrad Mynach campus, where he completed his first year in carpentry.

At the time Tom was a keen sportsman, with an exciting future in mountain biking, but an accident when out riding, left him wheelchair bound.

Whilst undergoing treatment at Rookwood Hospital, he was encouraged to try table tennis and the rest is history! Tom has an impressive list of successful wins, representing GB at Major Championships and in 2017, moved from the GB Pathway Squad to the GB Performance Squad.

Speaking on his success at the Tokyo Games Tom said “It’s been an amazing experience, I’m so proud to have been part of Paralympics GB”.
