Former Cymoedd apprentice Arfon Carhart is currently studying a Chemistry degree at the University of South Wales where he is employed as a Chemistry Technician; following on from an apprenticeship programme, which he enrolled on in 2015.
Twenty –six year old Arfon from Pontypridd has had a keen interest in Chemistry since he was 11 years of age, when an alkali metals experiment at school sparked the beginning of what would be his journey in pursuing a career in Chemistry.
Due to family commitments when studying his GCSE’s Arfon missed a few exams and did not achieve the grades he required. However, as a highly motivated person with strong work ethics he decided to pursue his passion for a career in Sciences and enrolled at Coleg y Cymoedd.
The BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Applied Science course was the perfect option for Arfon to return to studying. With knowledgeable and supportive staff including Course Tutor Lena Shipley, who re-kindled his passion and gave him the confidence to believe in himself – Arfon progressed to the Advanced Apprenticeship with BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science.
Speaking about his time at the college Arfon said” The college is modern and has a friendly atmosphere and importantly for my course it had great laboratory facilities. The course was great at covering the overall subject of Science itself. Both the Level 2 and 3 BTEC’s cover the basic and advanced theory of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Maths as well as teaching you lab skills that easily cross over into the academic and industry world.
I am not the sort of person where studying comes naturally but my drive to succeed has meant extra work has to be put in to catch up and stay on top. I am hoping to finish my final exams this year and complete my Chemistry degree; with a predicted First Class honours.
I would 100% recommend Coleg y Cymoedd to anyone, this place changed my life for the better and that was down to the course, individuals and expertise provided”.
