Course Information

This course offers a route into Higher Education for both vocational and academic courses including Social Work, Youth Work, Community Work, Housing, Law, Criminology, Psychology and other Social Science based courses.

The objective of the course is to provide a supportive and friendly environment to enable you to develop your potential and to prepare you for university study.

What Will I Learn?

You will study vocational subjects related to your course such as Social Work Practice and Theories, Psychology, Criminology and Sociology in addition to literacy, study skills and numeracy.

Entry Requirements

No formal qualifications are required however you will be invited to undertake a literacy and numeracy assessment prior to interview to determine your suitability for the course. As the course requires a high level of dedication and academic rigour, you may be directed to a more appropriate programme of study.

Assessment

You will be assessed by tutors throughout your course. Assessment will cover practical skills, oral questioning, assignment work and written questions. You will be required to sit short examinations throughout the course.

Description

Social workers provide information, advice and support to those who are socially excluded or are experiencing crisis; they protect the welfare of vulnerable groups including children, young people, people with disabilities, elderly people and people who are mentally or physically ill, and they may specialise in specific areas of work.

Entry Requirements

Social work is a regulated profession and practitioners must be registered with the appropriate statutory body. To register a social worker must satisfy the criteria for registration. Non-graduates must undertake a three-year degree in social work; graduates with relevant experience may take a two-year postgraduate diploma/Masters degree. Prior relevant work experience or relevant voluntary work is encouraged. Background checks including a CRB check are required.
