Course Information

This practical course is for learners who have successfully completed the Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery, who wish to further develop their skills and knowledge in the Carpentry industry and seek employment or a Modern Apprenticeship.

What Will I Learn?

The Level 2 Diploma is part of the Foundation Modern Apprenticeship framework. The course includes several units which are each split into two, to test your theoretical knowledge and practical ability.

You will also need to work on a timed practical test. You will also be required to complete Essential Skills at Level 2 in both Communication and Application of Number and also the Construction Site Safety test which will allow you to apply for the site safety (CSCS) card. The units covered include: Carcassing for floors and roofing; Erecting and dismantling basic platforms (scaffolding); First and second fixings; Storing materials and equipment; Using portable hand tools; Working efficiently. Alongside this course you will also study the Welsh Baccalaureate.

Entry Requirements

You will be required to have successfully completed the Level 1 in Carpentry & Joinery.

You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.

Assessment

You will complete a range of practical tasks, projects and written assignments and produce a portfolio of evidence.

Description

Carpenters and joiners construct, erect, install and repair wooden structures and fittings used in internal and external frameworks and cut, shape, fit and assemble wood to make templates, jigs, scale models and scenic equipment for theatres.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal academic entry requirements, though GCSEs/S grades are advantageous. Entry is typically through an apprenticeship or traineeship approved by ConstructionSkills leading to an NVQ/SVQ in General Construction at Level 3.
