This is a one year course for learners who have successfully completed the Level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating. This qualification can also form part of the Modern Apprentice Framework.
What Will I Learn?
You will carry out practical tasks and gain the underpinning knowledge in painting and decorating. The course includes:
Working efficiently, • Storing materials and equipment, • Preparing the working area and surfaces for decorating, • Erecting and dismantling basic working platforms (scaffolding), • Applying various wall-papers and paint to a variety of surfaces, • Applying paint and basic specialist paint finishes.
You will also complete Essential Skills at level 2 in both Communications and Application of Number and you will be required to complete the Construction Site Safety - Health and Safety test which will then enable you to apply for the site safety card (CSCS card) required to work on a construction site.
Successful completion of a Level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating.
You will be invited to attend an interview and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required.
Learners will complete a range of theory and practical tasks, projects, a phase tests. Written assignments and a portfolio of evidence must be produced. An external, on-line examination will be completed towards the end of the course.

Purchase of steel toe capped boots, overalls and a course text book is required for this course. Please discuss this at interview stage with a tutor after you have applied.
- The successful completion of this qualification will enable you to seek employment in the construction industry as an apprentice painter/decorator. On achieving employment you can then undertake an NVQ at level 2 to complete the Foundation Modern Apprenticeship framework.

Those working in this unit group apply paint, varnish, wallpaper and other protective and decorative materials to interior and exterior walls and surfaces, paint designs on wood, glass, metal, plastics and other materials, and stain, wax and french polish wood surfaces by hand.
There are no formal academic entry requirements, though GCSEs/S grades are advantageous. Entry is typically through an apprenticeship or traineeship approved by ConstructionSkills leading to an NVQ/SVQ in General Construction at Level 3.
