This course is an introduction to the skills required to work as a professional chef in the industry, a foundation for a career within the exciting customer focussed Hospitality profession.
You will benefit from a variety of activities designed to bring out the best of your potential, and enable you to use your skills and knowledge to progress to a Level 2 Hospitality and Catering qualification. Within this programme you will also study Essential skills Wales.
What Will I Learn?
You will study units that reflect the needs of the catering industry, while further preparing you for a career within this sector.
You will study; Primary aspects of hospitality, Employment Standards, Health & Safety, Customer Service and Essential Skills in Communication & Application of Number & Information Technology
Our Hospitality and Catering courses will give you the skills you need to success within the industry. You will gain hands on experience working within our professional kitchens and restaurants. Our training restaurants are open to the public, this will give you a great opportunity to see what it’s like to work in the industry. When you decide the time is right to look for employment you will already have experience of working within a professional environment.
You will require 3 GCSEs at grades A*- E including English/Welsh and Maths/Numeracy or a foundation course qualification including Essential Skills Communication and Application of Number at Entry Level 3.
You will be invited to attend an interview. During this interview you will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required. Your interview will include a course presentation. Relevant uniform and equipment is needed for this course, a full uniform list will be provided.
You will be assessed via a range of methods which include continual assessment, through observation of your practical work, the completion of a portfolio, theoretical evidence and assignment work. There are external examinations and Essential Skills portfolios.

Restaurant and catering establishment managers and proprietors plan, direct and co-ordinate the catering services of restaurants, hotels and large-scale catering services within other organisations.
Entry is possible with a variety of academic qualifications and/or relevant experience. Larger restaurants and catering chains offer managerial trainee schemes, entry to which may be based on a variety of qualifications and/or relevant experience. Off- and on-the-job training is provided. Various vocational qualifications are available at Levels 2 to 4.
