Course Information

This Level 1 course will help you gain confidence to progress further in your chosen occupational area and enhance your own personal development, helping you to achieve your goals in travel and tourism.

What Will I Learn?

The course has been designed in consultation with both representatives from the travel industry and colleges. It aims to cover areas that employers in the travel and tourism sector have identified as needing suitably qualified staff.

You will enjoy a broad range of activities within the course such as visits, guest speakers and use of facilities both on and off site. You will study a variety of units such as Worldwide Travel and Tourism Destinations, a Foreign or Sign Language and Work Place Communications.

Entry Requirements

You will require 3 GCSEs at grades A*- E including Maths and English/Welsh, or completion of a full vocational programme at Entry 3 which must also include GCSE Maths/Numeracy & English/Welsh at grades A*-E or equivalent such as Entry 3 ESW Communications and Application of Number. Learners on this course need to have satisfactory clearance with the Disclosure and Barring Service.

You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required.


You must complete a range of written and practical assessments. Assessment will cover practical skills, oral questioning, assignment work and written questions. You will receive feedback on your progress throughout the course.

Job holders in this unit group plan, organise, direct and co-ordinate the activities and resources of hotels, hostels, lodging homes, holiday camps, holiday flats and chalets, and organise the domestic, catering, and entertainment facilities on passenger ships.

Entry Requirements

Entry is possible with a variety of academic qualifications and/or relevant experience. Candidates for these usually require a BTEC/SQA award, a degree or equivalent qualification, or a professional qualification. Off- and on-the-job training is provided and large hotel chains normally offer management trainee schemes. NVQs/SVQs in management for hospitality, leisure and tourism are available at Levels 3 and 4.
