The RSL Diploma in Performing Arts is a 1-year three AS Level equivalent course. This course is designed for those seriously interested in all 3 disciplines of dance, singing and drama. It offers the chance to study for a nationally recognised Performing Arts qualification, which will allow you to develop a range of skills required for performance in the medium of theatre. Regular visits to productions are undertaken as well as professional tours and workshops.
The course introduces a range of performance disciplines, which enables you to make a choice of a specialist pathway.
What Will I Learn?
The course is made up of nine units - five core units, which everyone takes, and five specialist units.
Core Units: these include; • Performance Preparation • Planning for a Career in the Creative and Performing Arts
Specialist Units include: • Elizabethan or Jacobean Theatre L3 • Comedy Drama in Performance • Ensemble Dance Performance • Dance Technique and Performance 1 • Musical Theatre Performance
5 GCSEs at grades A*- C including English/Welsh and Maths/Numeracy or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma at merit grade or above in a creative related subject.
You will be invited to attend an audition/interview to prove your skills and qualities in an audition setting in dance/singing/drama. You will also be required to undertake an initial assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required.
There is continuous assessment throughout the course for practical and written assignments. All units are internally assessed and externally moderated. On successful completion of this qualification an overall grade is given of Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Actors, entertainers and presenters sing, portray roles in dramatic productions, perform comedy routines, gymnastic feats and tricks of illusion, train animals to perform and perform with them, and introduce and present radio and television programmes.
Entry does not depend on academic qualifications although some drama schools require candidates to have GCSEs/S grades or A levels/H grades or a degree. Entry can be based upon an audition. Membership of the appropriate trade union is usually required. NVQs/SVQs in performing arts are available.
