This course provides the knowledge and practical skills necessary for working in a variety of Childcare settings.
You will be taught in college for two days per week and the remaining three days will be spent in work placement, applying theory into practice as you need to show competence in both knowledge and skills. You will be visited regularly and assessed working directly with children.
What Will I Learn?
Learners must achieve a minimum of 65 credits to achieve the CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Children’s Care, Learning and Development (Wales and Northern Ireland) (QCF). These will be a combination of mandatory and optional units which reflect your work role.
Learners are required to undertake 700 hours of work placement within a variety of real work environments. The requirement cannot be met by time spent with children within a learner’s family/extended family, babysitting or through other informal arrangements.
You will study a range of units, such as Child Development from 0 -19 years, Observation & Assessment, Play, Planning to meet the requirements of the curriculum, Safeguarding and working in partnership with parents and professionals. In addition to these units, you will study the Essential Skill of Communication.
You will require 5 GCSEs at grades A*- C, including English/Welsh and Maths/Numeracy, or completion of a Level 2 Childcare or Health & Social Care qualification with ESW Level 2 Application of Number and ESW Level 2 Communication. Plus satisfactory references. As well as producing a satisfactory DBS , applicants are required to provide evidence of their suitability to work in the care sector . All applicants will be provided with a “ Suitability for Care pro-forma “ that must be completed .
You must have satisfactory clearance with the Disclosure and Barring Service .You will be invited to attend an interview. During this interview, you will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required.
You will be assessed using a range of methods, which will include written assignments and practical assessment in work placement.

- After successfully completing this course, you will be able to apply for employment within a childcare setting, e.g. schools, nurseries, special schools, day-care centres, hospitals or working for private families as a nanny, or progress to the Level 3 Extended Diploma for Children’s Care, Learning and Development, which will allow you to undertake courses/degrees in Higher Education.

Primary (and middle school deemed primary) and nursery education teaching professionals plan, organise and provide instruction to children at all levels up to the age of entry into secondary education.
Entry is with a first degree that provides QTS (qualified teacher status) or, in Scotland, TQ (teaching qualification); or other relevant degree followed by further postgraduate training (most commonly PGCE – Postgraduate Certificate in Secondary Education, or, in Scotland, PGDE – Professional Graduate Diploma in Education). Further and higher professional qualifications are required for some teaching posts.
