The VRQ (Vocationally Related Qualification) focusses on the practical aspects of Engineering. The qualification covers the intermediate knowledge, understanding, and skills that are required by someone working in the engineering industry. You will learn by completing practical projects and assessments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities, and demands.
You will also complete units of the QPEO Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations at level 2. In addition to these qualifications, you will also study, at an appropriate level, Essential Skills for Work & Life, Communication, Application of Number or GCSE English/Maths.
What Will I Learn?
For the VRQ Diploma, you will study the following units:
• Engineering Environmental Awareness • Engineering Techniques • Engineering Mathematics and Science Principle • Fitting & Assembly Techniques • Manual Turning Techniques • Manual Milling Techniques
For the QPEO Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations, you will complete the following unit:
• Preparing and using lathes for Turning techniques
You will require 4 GCSEs at grades A*- D including Maths/Numeracy, English/Welsh & Science or a Level 1 qualification with the appropriate selection of units.
You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish if any support is required.
Assessment methods within this qualification include an on-screen multiple-choice examination for the mandatory unit and a Centre marked practical and theory assessments for the optional units. The on-screen multiple-choice examination is set by EAL and marked by EAL. The internal assessment is set by EAL and marked by members of the delivery team at the Centre.

You will be required to purchase Uniform (T Shirt and Trousers), safety boots & safety glasses (approx £55). Please discuss this at interview stage with a tutor after you have applied.
- On successful completion of this course, you will have the opportunity to progress onto the BTEC level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering (Nantgarw) or the VRQ level 3 Certificate in Engineering Technologies (Nantgarw/Rhondda). However, this is subject to a grading board and interview.
