You will work towards a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Rail Engineering Track Maintenance. You will also complete an Essential Skills Wales qualification in Application of Number or Communication.
What Will I Learn?
You will learn how to
• Prepare to undertake duties in the rail industry • Carry out routine inspection of the Permanent Way infrastructure • Assist in preparing resources for Permanent Way activities • Undertake replacement of Permanent Way assets and components
• Restore track geometry faults to operational condition by the manual repair of Permanent Way assets and components • Prepare small plant, measuring equipment and tools for Permanent Way renewal or maintenance • Deal with incidents and contingencies within the rail railway environment • Lift and move Permanent Way materials, components and equipment
• Restore plan line track geometry to operational condition • Ensure that the rail track is fit for operational purposes following engineering activity and reinstating the work site after Permanent Way activities.
4 GCSE's A*-D that must include Maths/Numeracy, English/Welsh and Science or another Level 1 qualification with the appropriate selection and grades of units
You will submit a range of evidence to your portfolio. You will be assessed through direct observation, writing job reports and photographic evidence.

You will be required to purchase PPE/High Visibility workwear (£40) & steel toe capped boots. Please discuss this at interview stage with a tutor after you have applied.
- Upon completion of the Level 2 Certificate in Rail Engineering, you can progress within the industry in becoming a Skilled Track Operative. Further progression routes can include industry specific roles such as Lookout/Site Warden, Controller of Site Safety and Engineering Supervisor.
