This course is primarily intended for those wishing to enter the motor vehicle industry and progress to higher level motor vehicle studies.
What Will I Learn?
You will be studying for a vocational qualification designed to enable you to enter one of the various branches of the retail motor industry.
The course compromises: Vehicle Practical, Theory taught using a variety of methods, e.g. lectures, tutorials and investigations. Motor Vehicle related industrial/educational visits may be incorporated into the programme and Learners will use some of the newest, state of the art equipment to aid in their learning process.
You will study several units which involve removing, testing and replacing units and components/service items. The practical experience alone is invaluable to prospective employers. This course is supported by a Welsh Baccalaureate qualification as well as key skills Level 1. The academic studies may be supported by work experience and field trips?
You will require 3 GCSEs at grades A*- E including Maths/Numeracy and English/Welsh, or an Entry level qualification in Motor Vehicle. You may also be required to pass an entry test.
You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.
Assessment will be undertaken through online knowledge tests and a workshop-based portfolio, in which you record details of work assessments carried out.

You will be required to purchase Uniform (T Shirt and Trousers), safety boots & safety glasses (approx £55). Please discuss this at interview stage with a tutor after you have applied.
- After successfully completing this course you will be able to apply for various positions within the retail motor industry. It can also be the first step to eventually progress to study of a Higher National Diploma or a Degree in Vehicle subjects such as Motorsport engineering. Progression is offered within Ystrad Mynach Campus, in a new purpose built facility where you can apply to study for a Level 2 qualification (subject to a theory and practical assessment).

Vehicle technicians, mechanics and electricians accept calls for help and repair and service the mechanical parts and electrical/electronic circuitry and components of cars, lorries, buses, motorcycles and other motor vehicles, and repair and service auto air-conditioning systems.
There are no formal academic entry requirements, although some employers may require GCSEs/S grades or an equivalent qualification. Training is undertaken off- and on-the-job. NVQs/SVQs at Levels 2 and 3 are available. Apprenticeships at NVQ/SVQ Levels 2 and 3 are available and take three to four years to complete.
