The Beauty Therapy studies qualification has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills in; how to provide eyelash and brow treatments, removing hair using waxing techniques, manicure, pedicure and skincare. To further enhance your practical skills optional units to enhance your studies are the application of tanning techniques, instruction on make-up application, removing hair using alternatives to wax such as threading or sugaring, eyelash perming, ear piercing or the creative skill of nail art.
There may also be an opportunity for learners to further enhance their skills with the choice of numerous short courses such as make-up application, removing hair using alternatives to wax such as threading or sugaring, eyelash perming, ear piercing or the creative skill of nail art. Underpinning this qualification you will develop a sound knowledge of health and safety practice in a salon environment, how to contribute to the effective running of a beauty business, how to carry out effective salon reception duties and how to display retail stock to promote sales in the salon. You will also develop a knowledge and understanding of the practical skills learned throughout this qualification. The purpose of this qualification is to develop your skills in beauty therapy to a high level of occupational ability, to enable you to perform your own salon services. You will also study the Welsh Baccalaureate, Essential Skills Wales and Customer Service.
What Will I Learn?
You will study units that reflect the needs of the Beauty and Spa profession, while further preparing you for a career within this sector you will study; Beauty Therapy skills, including: Provide facial skin care treatments, Instruction of Make-Up, provide pedicure treatment, Provide manicure treatments ,Carry out waxing services, Instruction on makeup , Provide eye lash & brow treatments, Apply skin tanning techniques, Salon reception duties, Client care and communication in beauty related industries, Working in beauty related industries, Follow health & safety practice in the salon, Display stock to promote sales in a salon, Employment Standards, Health & Safety and Customer Service.
You will also study Essential Skills in Communication & Application of Number and Information Technology. The course contains both theory and practical Beauty based lessons with many opportunities to work within a commercial environment
The Welsh Baccalaureate- you will explore a wide range of areas including how Wales 'fits in' with Europe and the rest of the world, the health of the nation and how to be enterprising You will also be required to undertake 25 hours’ of work placement; this is a mandatory element of the programme.
You will require 3 GCSEs grades A*- D including English/Welsh and Maths/Numeracy or a Level 1 sector skills course qualification.
You will also be required to undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required and you may need to attend a course information presentation. Applicants with appropriate experience who do not necessarily meet the academic qualifications may be considered.
You will be assessed via a range of methods which include continual assessment, through observation of your practical work, the completion of a portfolio, theoretical evidence and assignment work. There may be external examinations and Essential Skills portfolios.

- On successful completion of this programme you may decide to enter employment within the sector or you may decide to progress onto the Level 3 Beauty Therapy or Spa programme, which is strongly recommended to achieve your full potential for the professional requirements of the Industry or seek employment within the sector.
