Course Information

This practical course is for learners who have successfully completed the Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery, who wish to further develop their skills and knowledge in the Carpentry industry and seek employment or a Modern Apprenticeship.

What Will I Learn?

The Level 2 Diploma is part of the Foundation Modern Apprenticeship framework. The course includes several units which are each split into two, to test your theoretical knowledge and practical ability.

You will also need to work on a timed practical test. You will also be required to complete Essential Skills at Level 2 in both Communication and Application of Number and also the Construction Site Safety test which will allow you to apply for the site safety (CSCS) card. The units covered include: Carcassing for floors and roofing; Erecting and dismantling basic platforms (scaffolding); First and second fixings; Storing materials and equipment; Using portable hand tools; Working efficiently.

Entry Requirements

You will be required to have successfully completed the Level 1 in Carpentry & Joinery.

You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.


You will complete a range of practical tasks, projects and written assignments and produce a portfolio of evidence.

Purchase of steel toe capped boots, overalls and a course text book is required for this course. Please discuss this at interview stage with a tutor after you have applied.

Career Progression

  • On completion of this qualification, you will be able to seek employment in the construction industry as an apprentice Carpenter and complete an NVQ at Level 2 which will complete the Foundation Modern Apprenticeship framework.
