Film Studies is an increasingly fast-growing and popular subject at A Level and in universities. Studying Film is not simply about movies - it is also the study of industries, cultures, politics and social change. This subject is for those who wish to deepen their understanding and appreciation of film both practically and academically, and also for those who want to develop their creativity, observational, and critical thinking skills.
What Will I Learn?
You will study American and British film for the AS year, and undertake a portfolio of coursework which will count as 30% towards your final grade. The first year introduces you to the language of film – those separate elements that work together to create meaning (editing, cinematography, mise en scene, performance and sound). You will learn to deconstruct films; analyse the messages they carry and explore the affect they have on audiences.
The second year is focused on global film and film movements, including silent film and experimental film.
You will also be expected to watch films outside of classes, as part of your independent study hours.
Minimum 5 GCSEs at C Grade or above, including English/Welsh Language and English/Welsh Literature.
You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.
Year 1 - Continual assessment throughout the year, with NEA portfolio submitted at end of year. Year 2 - Continual assessment throughout the year, with 2 exams at the end of the year. Please note: This is a linear qualification, therefore the exams all take place at the end of the second year.
