Course Information
This is a ‘vocational course’ designed to provide you with a practical learning experience in science. It is suitable for learners that wish to pursue a career in science or a science related occupation.
What Will I Learn?
Year one includes units that cover the fundamental topics of the three science disciplines, practical techniques and develops the understanding of practical, legal and organisational aspects essential to those working within the science industry. A BTEC Certificate in Applied Science is equivalent to an AS Level qualification.
Year two includes specialist units such as Human Physiology*, Biochemistry* and Chemical Laboratory Techniques*. These develop skills within specialised areas of science. A BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science is equivalent to a full A Level qualification.
*These units may be substituted for alternatives.
Entry Requirements
You will require 5 GCSEs Grades A*- C including Maths, English/Welsh Language and a Science equivalent.
You will be invited to attend an interview, and will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy, to establish any support required.
Assessment
You will be assessed continuously through assignment based coursework.

- On successful completion of this course many learners apply to university and are offered places to study courses such as Applied Biology, Zoology, Animal Science, Nursing, Microbiology, Nutrition, Biochemistry, Parasitology, Dental Technician/Nursing or Veterinary Nursing, Radiography [Diagnostic or Therapeutic], Hospital Technician [there is an enormous variety of types], Operating Theatre Practitioners or any career involving numerous types of laboratory work. Whatever degree that you may chose it is worth noting that Biological Sciences graduates have a very high employability rating. A number of learners go directly into employment or move onto an apprenticeship programme.
